One of the things I was most impressed about with this book was the way the author managed to perfectly capture the voice of Alice as a young girl through her growing into a young lady on into middle age and old age. Ms. Benjamin has blended known facts with imagined circumstances to give us a fascinating look into life at Oxford in Victorian England. To see the relationship between Alice Liddell, the real life little girl who was the inspiration for "Alice in Wonderland", and Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) through Alice's eyes starting at the age of seven changing through the years from delighted innocence to confusion and shame was heartbreaking, yet somehow the author has managed to preserve a tenderness and sympathy for both of them.
